Liu Sanjie means, literally, "Liu the Third Sister" — the third daughter of the Liu family. She is a legendary figure of the Zhuang people, the largest ethnic minority in Guangxi, and is remembered above all as a peerless singer, sometimes called a "goddess of song." The oldest stories about her are usually traced back many centuries, to around the Song dynasty, and there is no single fixed biography — she belongs to oral tradition, so the details shift from village to village. What stays constant is the image of a young woman whose voice and quick wit made her the equal of anyone who challenged her.
A singer, not a warrior
In a region where courtship, work and celebration all carried their own songs, Liu Sanjie's weapon is the song itself. The tales most often told have her winning antiphonal "song duels" — call-and-response contests where two singers improvise verses back and forth — against scholars hired to out-sing her, and against a landlord who wants to silence or possess her. She wins by being cleverer and truer, not stronger. That is why she endures as a folk hero: she stands for ordinary people, for the mountain-song tradition of Guangxi, and for the idea that a sharp, honest voice can outmatch wealth and rank.
From village song to a famous film
The legend spread far beyond Guangxi thanks to the 1960 musical film Third Sister Liu (Liu Sanjie), directed by Su Li, which set the story against the region's real karst landscapes and filled it with Zhuang folk melodies. It became one of China's best-loved musicals, screened for years and known across generations, and it fixed many people's mental image of who Liu Sanjie is. If a Chinese visitor beside you at the show already knows the tunes, this film is usually why — for a huge audience, the movie and the legend have become almost the same thing.
Why Guangxi holds her close
Liu Sanjie is not a national myth so much as a regional one, rooted specifically in Guangxi and in Zhuang identity. The mountain-song culture she represents is a real, living tradition here, with song festivals and antiphonal singing still practised. That local rootedness is part of why staging the show on the Li River, with a cast drawn from nearby communities, feels of a piece with the legend rather than bolted onto it. The place, the people and the songs all belong to the same corner of southern China, and the show never lets you forget that it is happening in Liu Sanjie's own country rather than on a borrowed stage.

It helps to arrive with the right expectation: Impression Sanjie Liu is a large-scale artistic interpretation inspired by Liu Sanjie, not a literal, scene-by-scene retelling of the legend or a subtitled play you need to follow. It draws on the mood, the songs and the imagery associated with her — voices carrying across water, the river life of the Zhuang, the romance of the landscape — and turns them into a wordless spectacle of light, movement and music. Knowing the outline of the legend deepens what you see, but you do not need to track a plot to be moved by it.
Hearing the songs for yourself
If the legend interests you, the folk-song thread is easy to follow up on around Yangshuo. The melodies woven through the show belong to a wider Guangxi tradition of mountain songs, and you will hear echoes of them in local performances, markets and festivals across the region. Watching the 1960 film before or after your trip is the single best piece of preparation — it gives you the tunes, the characters and the sense of why this particular singer, out of all of folklore, ended up with a river valley staged in her name.
