What this ticket covers

This is a show ticket, not a tour. You get one seat at Impression Sanjie Liu, in the seat zone of the option you book. An English-speaking representative from Sunflower Tours China, the local provider, meets you at the theatre's main entrance with your paper ticket and shows you to your seats. Hotel pickup in Yangshuo is available as a separate option when you book. Transfers to or from hotels in Guilin aren't included. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the show, and you can reserve now and pay later.

Show times and how long it runs

The show starts after dark and lasts about 70 minutes, in seven scenes. Weeknights usually have one show at 20:00. Weekends and public holidays often have two, at 19:30 and 21:05, and extra shows can be added on busy dates. Times can change with the season or the weather, so the start time on your booking is the one that counts. You'll see the start times for your date when you check availability. A 20:00 show finishes at about 21:10, and a 21:05 show at about 22:15.

Choosing a seat zone

The audience sits in one large grandstand facing the river, and the zones run from C, the cheapest, through B2 and B1 to A2 and A1. C seats put you closest to the performers on the water. The B zones sit higher, which helps you take in the patterns the cast makes across the river and the lit peaks behind. B1 is widely seen as the best value, and it's one of the two seat types the provider recommends, along with VIP. The A zone is the only covered seating. You book a zone, and the row within it is allocated for you.

Collecting your ticket on the night

The QR code in your booking is not your theatre ticket, so don't queue at the gates with it. Be at the main entrance of the theatre 30 minutes before the start. Your representative will be waiting there with a name sign and your paper tickets. The provider reaches you by WhatsApp, so a working WhatsApp number is required to book, though iMessage on an iPhone also works. Check before you travel that the app will work on your phone in China. Tickets can't be exchanged, and if you arrive late or miss the show, you don't get a refund.

Where the theatre is

The show is staged at the Lijiang Shanshui Theatre on Tianyuan Road in Yangshuo, on the Li River just outside the West Street pedestrian area. From West Street it's about a 25-minute walk, or about 10 minutes by electric scooter. Taxis and ride-hailing apps work too. Show the driver the theatre's Chinese name, written below. If you'd rather not deal with transport, add the Yangshuo hotel pickup option when you book. Some Yangshuo hotels also run their own shuttle to the show, so ask yours.

Getting there from Guilin

Guilin is the regional hub, but the show is in Yangshuo, so a night trip from Guilin takes real planning. Buses run between Guilin and Yangshuo. Yangshuo also has a station on the Guiyang to Guangzhou high-speed line, but it's in Xingping, about 28 kilometres northeast of Yangshuo town. From there, the dedicated high-speed rail shuttle bus takes about an hour to reach central Yangshuo, once you count waiting time and traffic. This ticket doesn't include transport from Guilin. With a show ending after 21:00, staying the night in Yangshuo is much simpler than heading back to Guilin.

Rain, cold and what to bring

Apart from the A zone, every seat is open to the sky. In light rain the show goes on and disposable ponchos are handed out. Heavy rain or a storm can cancel the performance, and the theatre then refunds tickets in full. Umbrellas aren't allowed, so a light rain jacket works better. Summer evenings bring mosquitoes and the biggest crowds. Winter evenings are cold by the water, so bring a windproof layer. Autumn, from September to November, usually has less rain and cooler nights.

Following the show without Chinese

You don't need to understand the words. The singing is in Mandarin and a local dialect, with no subtitles in Chinese or English, but the show is built on light, colour and movement rather than dialogue. Directed by Zhang Yimou, it opened on 20 March 2004. More than 600 performers take part, in costumes of the Zhuang, Miao and Yao peoples, many of them lit with LEDs. The seven scenes run from a prelude through red, green, gold, blue and silver episodes to a closing epilogue. The silver scene, with 200 women in festive costume on the water, is often called the most striking.

Buying at the theatre or booking ahead

You can buy tickets at the theatre itself, and other booking platforms sell them too. Buying on the spot means queueing at a box office where few staff speak English. Booking ahead in English means the representative, the handover at the gate and help finding your seats come with the ticket. Whichever way you buy, booking at least a few days ahead is sensible. The show is no small local event: by its 20th anniversary in 2024 it had been performed more than 8,000 times, to over 20 million people.

Who this isn't for

Skip this ticket if you can't communicate in English, or if you won't have WhatsApp or iMessage working in China, because the handover depends on both. If you're staying in Guilin and want transport included, you'll need a different product. And if you can't be sure of reaching the main entrance 30 minutes before the start, think twice: a late arrival or a missed show isn't refunded. For families with restless young children, an indoor show in Guilin may suit the evening better.
